With life expectancy now extending well beyond age 80, many women may enjoy as many years after menopause as before it. It is a stage in life that can be liberating and rewarding, offering renewed energy and the potential to fulfill new ambitions. That’s why it is important for post menopausal women to take an active role in maintaining their bone and heart health.
Estrogen is the hormone produced by the ovaries that promotes the development and maintenance of typical female sexual characteristics. It also helps to protect bones and heart health throughout life. Unfortunately, as a woman’s estrogen levels decline, that protection subsides. The ability to absorb calcium decreases, affecting bone density, and heart and cholesterol health may be more difficult to maintain.
